Anthony Gordon has only partly fulfilled the promise he made to Amanda Staveley amid fresh claims he could leave Newcastle United for Liverpool.
Gordon joined Newcastle United from Everton in January 2023 and starred during the 2023/24 campaign before struggling to scale such heights in the 2024/25 season.
Liverpool could pay £100million to sign Gordon, having come close to landing him last summer.
Former Newcastle director Staveley played a key role in bringing Gordon to St James’ Park, as was evident in the Amazon Prime documentary called ‘We are Newcastle United’.
While not entirely his own fault, Gordon hasn’t 100% delivered on the promise he made to Staveley.

What Anthony Gordon promised Amanda Staveley at Newcastle United
Speaking to the Newcastle United official website in September 2023, Gordon admitted he had watched the documentary.
He revealed that, after watching how hard Staveley worked to get a deal with Everton over the line, he sent a text to both her and former sporting director Dan Ashworth and promised to repay their faith.
“It wasn’t easy. I knew that at the time, but the documentary gave me a different insight,” he said.

“I actually texted Amanda and Dan after it saying thank you – and that I will repay that hard work.”
Why Anthony Gordon hasn’t fulfilled that promise
Gordon was a consistent force for Newcastle during the 2023/24 season, scoring 12 goals and registering 16 assists in 48 games.
Other than that, however, he’s only really shone in flashes. His first few months at the club were difficult, while last season he struggled with injury and a high-profile red card.
At only 24, it’s perhaps unfair to expect him to be at the top of his game all of the time, particularly in a Newcastle team who laboured at times last season.

Anthony Gordon’s stats for Newcastle United
Were he to stay at the club long-term, there’s every chance he would come good on the promise he made. Few would doubt his quality, after all.
Still, over two years into his time at the club, he’s only really had one brilliant season. Were he to leave this summer, it’d be with a tinge of disappointment.
