Liverpool's third summer exit close as Arne Slot green lights transfer to Champions League side

Liverpool’s Vitezslav Jaros is closing in on a move to Ajax as the transfer window reopens.

The goalkeeper, who made two senior appearances this season, is expected to join John Heitinga at Ajax, less than three weeks after the Dutchman left Liverpool to take up a head coach role at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Jaros operated as Liverpool’s third-coach keeper in 2024/25, but amid a summer of change in between the sticks, the stopper is expected to complete a season-long loan move to Ajax. No timeframe has been set on the deal but there is confidence in both Liverpool and Amsterdam that the short-term move will happen.

Forty-one-year-old Remko Pasveer was Ajax’s first-choice goalkeeper this term, having previously acted as back-up Geronimo Rulli, who joined Marseille last year. On-loan Matheus acted as second-choice this season, but has now returned to Braga.

Ajax had previously hoped to sign Mark Flekken, but the keeper opted to join Bayer Leverkusen rather than return to his homeland. The departing Brentford keeper was replaced by Caoimhin Kelleher at Brentford, in the first of Liverpool’s overhaul in that department.

Giorgi Mamardashivili will join Arne Slot ’s squad later this summer after agreeing terms on a transfer last year. Armin Pecsi has already arrived in a $2million deal, with the youngster expected to mainly play for the Under-21s next season.

For Jaros, the chance to compete for a no.1 spot is an exciting prospect, although it’s not clear whether Ajax will look to add more depth in that area.

The 23-year-old joined Liverpool from Slavia Prague in 2017 and progressed through the Reds’ youth ranks before establishing himself in the senior squad.

He enjoyed loans at St Patrick’s, Notts County, Stockport County and Sturm Graz, winning the league and cup double with the latter and featuring in the Europa Conference League.

After returning to Liverpool in the summer of 2024, he made his long-awaited debut in the latter stages of October’s 1-0 Premier League win over Crytsal Palace, replacing the injured Alisson late on.

The Czech international then made his first senior start in a Carabao Cup victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

It’s not clear if Liverpool will look to replace Jaros, or whether Armin will now assume the role of third-choice goalkeeper. Harvey Davies, who will turn 22 in September, is another option Slot can rely upon.

Jaros, who will team up with Jordan Henderson at Ajax, could face Liverpool next season in the Champions League.
