Former Premier League striker Emile Heskey has said that Man United should sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez.
The Red Devils are looking to add a new goalkeeper this summer as they aim to replace Andre Onana, who has had a poor season at Old Trafford full of mistake-ridden performances.
United have been linked to several world class keepers, one of which is Aston Villa’s Martinez, who is expected to be available for just £25m this summer. The Argentinian World Cup winner made 53 appearances for Villa last season, conceding 61 goals and providing 16 clean sheets, but he is expected to leave this summer.

Former Premier League striker Heskey has said that Man United should go all out and sign the 32-year-old. He told Prime Casino: “He’s got the presence to play for Manchester United. And he’s very confident. Whoever goes into Man United, you have to have some serious presence. You have to have some serious belief in yourself. And I think he’s got that because the pressure is going to be on from day dot, because when you look at Onana, his confidence is on the floor.”
“Whoever comes in next, they have to hit the ground running. Emi is an interesting character, and you’d need to be that to take on a challenge like United right now. He’s probably the closest goalkeeper in attitude to Fabien Barthez, and you need that. It’s a huge club, absolutely massive. He’s won the World Cup, he’s played with Lionel Messi, so he’s well suited as far as we can tell.”
Which other keeper could Man United sign?
Martinez isn’t the only name that has been linked with a move to Man United. Lille FC’s keeper Lucas Chevalier has also reportedly attracted the attention of those at Old Trafford.
Chevalier is a much younger option, and would provide United with a long-term solution at the goalkeeper position. However, he is less proven than Martinez and so would be more of a risky signing.
The French keeper made 48 appearances for Lille last term, conceding 53 goals and contributing to 13 clean sheets.
