Inter Milan targeting young Man United striker who once starred in Serie A - Manchester United News

Inter Milan have added Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund to the top of their list of targets, according to Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport. Hojlund previously starred in Serie A with Atalanta. The then 19 year old struck nine goals and provided two assists in 32 Serie A appearances during the 2022/23 season, catching the eye of several interested suitors.

United won the race for his signature, paying an initial £64 million for his services in the summer of 2023. His debut season in the Premier League saw him better his goal tally by one, scoring 10 goals in 30 Premier League appearances.

His form dipped last season though, only managing four goals. Hojlund has since come under much scrutiny from sections of Red Devils supporters who have called for big name replacements such as Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and Napoli’s Victor Osihmen.

United have already signed Wolves forward Matheus Cunha but he is considered more of an attacking midfielder than an out-and-out striker. The club are also weighing up a move for Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, breathing life into rumours of a departure for Hojlund.

With United missing out on European football for next season, they would likely have to sell players to raise funds for more incomings. Inter Milan could now grant them that wish.

The Champions League runner-ups had one of the oldest average ages in their starting lineups across all of European major leagues last season, and are prioritize signing younger players this summer.

They have reportedly added the 22-year-old Hojlund along with 23 year old Nick Woltemade of Stuttgart to their wishlist.

Hojlund tipped for Serie A return

Question marks have been drawn over whether or not Hojlund fits into Ruben Amorim’s system. His plummet in goal tally between his season with Erik ten Hag compared to his season with Amorim seems to suggest he is less comfortable in Amorim’s setup.

Ten Hag’s system created overloads for Hojlund to exploit space in behind defenses with his pace. Amorim prefers to attack with width, deploying two overlapping wingbacks supplying crosses. Hojlund has looked a frustrated figure at times, struggling to get on the end of goal scoring opportunities.

Inter have lacked youthful depth behind Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram. A second Italian publication, Corriere dello Sport, has reported that Hojlund would relish the chance to play Serie A football once more as well returning to the Champions League with Inter.

Inter is said to be keen on a loan with an option to buy the player, while United are reportedly willing to listen to offers in the £40-45 million range.
