Ex-Liverpool star raises Darwin Nunez to Arsenal theory after Florian Wirtz prediction

Former Liverpool player Dean Saunders believes Darwin Nunez could be a success at Arsenal.

Nunez is set to leave Liverpool this summer after three underwhelming years on Merseyside, with an exit from the Premier League altogether on the cards. Napoli, AC Milan, and Atletico Madrid have all been linked with Nunez, while there is also interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

There is no suggestion that Nunez could swap Merseyside for London — despite the Gunners' pressing need for a new striker — but Saunders believes the Uruguayan does possess the quality to make a positive impact at Arsenal.

"Liverpool doesn't carry anyone," Saunders said on talkSPORT. "There are no passengers, and that is why Liverpool won the league.

"Slot already has (Ryan) Gravenberch, (Alexis) Mac Allister, (Wataru) Endo, (Curtis) Jones, (Harvey) Elliott, and (Dominik) Szoboszlai in the middle, so it will be interesting to see where Wirtz is going to play.

"He is a world beater, and it is going to be like watching Thiago (Alcantara). When he played for Liverpool, he did things that nobody else can, and it will be the same with Wirtz.

"He can beat people, he scores goals, gets assists. He can play off the left and come infield, or in the 10 and more centrally. It makes you wonder if Slot is going to get rid of (Diojo) Jota or Nunez because they can't all play.

"Is there any fan out there, that if their club was linked with Nunez, would be disappointed? He hasn't got enough goals for Liverpool but there is a player there. I wouldn't be surprised if he went to Arsenal, or somewhere else, and scored 25 goals.

"Every striker you bring in is a gamble, especially coming into the Premier League like all these players Arsenal is linked with. At least he has played in the Premier League. You know what you are going to get, he works his socks off.

"Even if he doesn't score, he isn't a passenger, and that is why Liverpool fans like him. I see a player in there."

Meanwhile, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano gave an update on Napoli's interest in Nunez over the weekend, saying that concrete talks have been taking place ahead of a possible move.

"We are keeping the names that have been mentioned in recent days regarding Napoli's attack," Romano said, as quoted by Tutto Napoli. "I told you about Darwin Nunez, who has moved from phone calls to serious, direct and concrete contacts.

"Napoli is working on the Darwin Nunez operation, but it is not an easy operation, there is competition from other clubs including some from Saudi Arabia.

"We will understand more in the next few days, but it is a move that the Azzurri certainly want to try to make. There have also been calls from AC Milan to be informed about the situation, but the Italian club that is working hard on the Uruguayan striker - also with the player's agents - is Napoli.

"Now we will have to understand if it will be feasible from an economic and competition point of view, but the certainty is that Darwin Nunez will leave Liverpool."
