Liverpool tipped to 'go big' in transfer market as Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon named

Liverpool has shown it means business this summer, with the Reds not resting on their laurels after winning the Premier League title.

Having cruised to a 20th league crown, Arne Slot and Richard Hughes have wasted no time in preparing for next season’s defense, with some big names being added to the mix. Trent Alexander-Arnold might have left for Real Madrid, but Jeremie Frimpong has come in as an immediate replacement, while Florian Wirtz is expected to arrive on Merseyside later this week for his medical.

Milos Kerkez looks set to be the next target, and a deal for the Bournemouth left-back looks as though it should progress quickly after the Cherries confirmed his replacement. All of that makes for a sensational window in anyone’s books.

But the Reds might not be done there. Despite the aforementioned trio costing around $253 million, more signings could be made - and more big ones at that.

A new No. 9 is likely to be high on the shopping list, and Liverpool holds an interest in Alexander Isak. According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook though, he’s not the only Newcastle star the Reds are keen on.

Having predicted Liverpool would go “big” this summer, Crook went on to say: "They are massive admirers of Alexander Isak, no question about that, but it would take a huge offer to prise him away from Newcastle.

"The [Anthony] Gordon one is interesting. It's one I've always kept in my back pocket, as one that could be revisited, because he was very close to joining Liverpool this time last year, really close.

"To the extent where the deal was down to the final stages, and I think Newcastle just decided, we actually can't part company with this guy.

"So it wouldn't surprise me if there's still an itch there on Liverpool's part that needs to be scratched.

"But I think it would take a big offer, and maybe they're going to have to get players off the payroll before they would look at that."

Liverpool did indeed come close to signing Gordon last year, although the deal collapsed when it became clear that Newcastle wanted Jarell Quansah as part of the switch.

A new striker would appear to be the priority before a new winger, although Isak would not come cheaply by any stretch of the imagination, especially with Newcastle having secured Champions League football.

Liverpool looks almost certain to offload Darwin Nunez, while other players could make way and offer a decent return to the Reds amid their big spending this summer. Whether that would be enough to pry Isak away from St James’ Park though remains to be seen, never mind getting both him and Gordon.
