Liverpool have by all accounts secured Florian Wirtz in a record £116M (€136M) transfer, successfully stealing the 22-year-old German superstar attacker away from Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Manchester City in the process, but the deal isn’t quite done just yet.
While the fee and a five-year contract are agreed, the player still needs to undergo a medical and all parties have give final sign-off. When it comes to that medical, it turned out that reports last week out of Germany may have been jumping the gun a little, but certainly it isn’t far off.
According to The Athletic and David Ornstein, it will happen later this week. The player is currently on holiday following his Nations League commitments with Germany, who ended their campaign in the tournament with a 2-0 defeat to France in the third-place game on June 8th.
When he signs, the £100M up guaranteed portion of the fee will instantly make Wirtz Liverpool’s new record signing, and the £16M in add-ons could eventually take him past Chelsea signings Enzo Fernández and Moises Caicedo to set a new English transfer record.
The €148M (£126M) transfer of Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona in 2017 will remain the record German transfer. In addition to Wirtz and already signed right back Jeremie Frimpong, Liverpool are also expected to soon complete the signing of left back Milos Kerkez.
