Clinton native Cam Akers signs with New Orleans Saints

NEW ORLEANS (WLBT) - Clinton native and MHSAA State Championship-winning running back Cam Akers has signed a contract with the New Orleans Saints.

The Clinton High School grad put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the Saints on Friday, the franchise announced.

“It would be a blessing, man,” Akers said prior to being signed by the Saints. “It’s close to home, and there’s a lot of tradition here. I feel the tradition even in my state, so to be a part of it to feel it first-hand would be a blessing, and my family could catch all of the games. Hopefully it will work out.”

Akers, a five-year NFL veteran, was originally selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He spent last season with the Houston Texans and the Minnesota Vikings.

In his NFL career, Akers has tallied 2,025 rushing yards with 13 rushing touchdowns, along with 52 pass catches for 388 yards and four touchdowns.

Akers led the Clinton Arrows in his senior year to a MHSAA 6A State Championship win for the school’s first-ever title in football. He was also named the Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year that same season.
