Newcastle to bank up to £6m after what PIF have agreed, it will keep fans on side - expert

Newcastle United are set to tour Singapore and South Korea as part of their pre-season schedule.

Next month, Newcastle United will jet off to the Far East and will face games against the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham.

Indeed, Newcastle will spend part of pre-season in Singapore and the rest of their schedule has now been confirmed.

Eddie Howe’s side will take on Arsenal in Singapore before moving on to South Korea for games against an all-star K League side and Tottenham.

With that in mind, Geordie Boot Boys spoke to football finance expert Adam Williams about the finances involved.

How much Newcastle United could earn from pre-season tour of Asia

Williams highlighted the fact that Newcastle could stand to make £6million from their tour.

While they are expensive things to undertake, the club could still generate a sizeable amount of money even after considering the costs involved.

“If you look at what the elite teams earn from pre-season tours, they can expect to take home around £10m,” he said.

“You have to subtract costs from that – and these exhibitions are very expensive to organise. But on a net basis, they are still extremely lucrative. Newcastle aren’t quite in that bracket yet but they do have significant cache internationally.

“If I had to put a number on it, I’d say they could maybe make £5-6m from their pre-season tour in 2025. That’s in terms of the quantifiable benefits, such as fees from promoters, a cut of ticket sales etc. But there are lots of intangible benefits too.

“You can promote new sponsorships in key commercial markets, as Newcastle did last summer with Adidas in Japan, for example. It’s leverage with your sponsors when you can prove your appeal outside your own geography.

Williams also pointed to the fact that there is another perhaps more cynical reason as to why the club are doing it.

Touring in Asia may help engage with the audience and build a connection with potential supporters, who perhaps one day may feel so involved they come to visit the team on Tyneside.

“These tours are often as much about customer acquisition and retention as they are about revenue generation,” he added.

“Newcastle aren’t going to make any new fans in the UK and very few in Europe. But in South Korea, there are millions who haven’t chosen a team yet. If you can turn a casual football fan into a Newcastle supporter who will engage with the club financially – buying merchandise, potentially visiting St James’ Park and so on – then that’s a relatively cheap way to expand your commercial footprint.

“You also nurture your existing fanbase out there, which keeps them on side and more inclined to engage with the club. It’s a clinical way to talk about football fans, but this is the way that commercial and marketing departments see it.
