The City of San Antonio announced it will host 10 two-day workshops across the city to inform and gather feedback on Project Marvel, the planned sports and entertainment district in downtown San Antonio.
Workshop Day 1:
1:30-2:30 p.m., Housing focus group
3-4 p.m., Transportation focus group
6-8 p.m., Community forum and hands-on mapping exercise
Workshop Day 2:
Noon-7 p.m., Guiding principles open house (interactive stations)
1:30-2:30 p.m., Public community space focus group
3-4 p.m., Local business focus group
The meetings start next week and run through July, with one happening in each city district. Residents can attend at any time during the two-day schedule, said city spokesman Brian Chasnoff in an email.
The meetings are open to the public and are organized in partnership with Able City, a planning and architectural firm hired by the city to conduct the workshops.
The city is posting updates about the project on this page of its website.
Able City Partner Mario Peña said on Monday that he expects there will be between 50 and 60 participants in each group.
City officials first revealed sweeping plans for a sports entertainment district anchored by a new $1.5 billion Spurs arena downtown in November.
Since then, the city has revealed more details about the project and voters might get the chance in November to weigh in on a proposed venue tax increase that would help fund upgrades to the existing basketball arena and construction of a new one.
At the upcoming workshops, facilitators from Able City will guide roundtable discussions and focus groups covering the project’s scope, funding and impact. Some of the meetings will be focused on housing, transportation, local business and public community space.
Peña said every aspect of the sports district proposal is open to discussion, including public areas, parking and the new Spurs arena. Able City staff will publish the feedback on its website.
Spurs representatives also will be involved in the discussions, Peña said.
