Most of the talk surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason has centered around the offense and, more specifically, the wide receivers. They are returning second-year standout Brian Thomas, Jr. after a stellar rookie campaign. And, there is a chance you may have heard about Travis Hunter, some guy they drafted out of the University of Colorado. But, the wide receiver that has flown under the radar is free-agent signing Dyami Brown.

Brown went to the NFC Championship Game with the Washington Commanders last season and is expected to contribute to the Jaguars in 2025. From what he has seen so far, quarterback Trevor Lawrence is excited about what Brown can do for him.

“Man, I’ve been super impressed with him,” Lawrence said Thursday. “His speed. Obviously, he is a threat down the field, which is important as a receiver who can stretch the field. But also, he’s a really, really smart football player.”

Brown is entering his fifth season after four years in Washington. In 2024, he caught 40 balls for 303 yards and a touchdown in 16 games. Those stats won’t win anyone a fantasy football title, but he passes the eyeball test.

Lawrence impressed with Brown’s football IQ

The Jaguars don’t need Brown to be a superstar and they are in luck because he won’t be. However, they still need a reliable third wide receiver who can make plays and make defenses pay for giving Thomas and Hunter too much attention.

And, Lawrence says he’s gotten up to speed very quickly in OTAs and the recent mandatory minicamp.

“He’s picked up the system really quickly,” said Lawrence. “He’s always in the right spot. I think that’s something about him, I don’t know if you guys watched plenty of practices, he’s gotten the ball a lot because it seems like he’s always in the right spot.”

Of course, it’s easier to get excited about a guy in offseason practices when everyone is padless and in shorts.

Jaguars are excited for Brown’s feel for the game

There are only so many footballs to go around, so barring an injury to one of their starters, Brown won’t be a high-volume guy. But, he doesn’t need to be, he just needs to find the soft spots in a defense when called upon.

“He always has a feel for the zone, like where to sit, where to throttle, kind of those voids,” Lawrence continued. “I just think he’s really smart, and I’m really excited, adding him to the offense, to the weapons that we already have. It’s exciting.”

Jacksonville’s general manager James Gladstone liked Brown’s skill set back when he signed him as a free agent in March.

“What he provides just on a vertical plane and in run-after-catch scenarios, it’s something that is extremely exciting, extremely alluring for our offensive staff, and I think that he’ll be able to take another step to expand his game, and we’ll see him come to life in the same ways that he did towards the end of the season with Washington this last season, right off the bat, well, also expanding his role to fit what we’re intending on doing this coming season,” Gladstone said at the time.

Did they mention that they are excited? They should be as Brown is a dynamic player who can have an impact on games even if he’s not putting up pinball-machine numbers.
