While growing up, Wilshere looked up to one of England’s footballing greats and shared that David Beckham was his childhood hero.
He spoke with great admiration for the Manchester United legend, calling him the most influential English footballer of all time, both for his success on the pitch and his impact off it.
Wilshere viewed him as an ideal role model for aspiring English midfielders, not only for his playing ability but also for his professionalism and passion for the game.
The former Arsenal midfielder stated: “For me, he [Beckham] is the biggest English footballer there has ever been, both on and off the pitch.
“Sometimes people forget what he did on the pitch, he was a great player and he showed that for many years. For any young English midfielder, and for me growing up, he was the perfect role model.
“You can just watch him and learn – not just the way he plays but from his attitude as well, his professionalism and his love for the game. That rubs off on everyone.”
