With the Memphis Grizzlies [trading Desmond Bane](https://hardwoodhoudini.com/boston-celtics-desmond-bane-trade-orlando-magic-jaylen-brown-derrick-white-changed-everything-memphis-grizzlies-four-first-round-picks), the Boston Celtics have a perfect chance to repeat history by sending Jrue Holiday to the Memphis Grizzlies. Just two summers ago, the Celtics [shipped Marcus Smart](https://www.nba.com/grizzlies/news/memphis-grizzlies-acquire-marcus-smart-in-three-team-trade-with-boston-celtics-and-washington-wizards) to Memphis, and now, with the Grizzlies potentially in need of a two-guard next to Ja Morant, they could make a very similar move.
Depending on what the Grizzlies want to do with the rest of their roster, adding Holiday could help them compete in the West next year. And if that’s their goal, the Celtics should pounce on the opportunity to strike a deal with Memphis.
It could be the perfect opening.
**What would a Jrue Holiday-Grizzlies trade look like?**
--------------------------------------------------------
The biggest problem with a potential trade that would send Holiday to the Grizzlies is that the Celtics need to shed salary. And if Memphis wants to extend Jaren Jackson Jr., they shouldn’t be looking to add significant money to their books right now.
However, if a third team got involved, there could be a framework that works for both teams. It just depends on how much the Grizzlies are willing to pay for Holiday.
Here’s a potential deal that includes the Atlanta Hawks and could interest all parties involved:
**Celtics get:** Brandon Clarke, 2028 Orlando first-round pick (via MEM)
**Hawks get:** Cole Anthony, Two second-round picks (via BOS and MEM)
**Grizzlies get:** Jrue Holiday
_\*This trade cannot happen for roughly two months, as Cole Anthony cannot be aggregated with other salaries until then._
The Celtics would shed roughly $19.9 million in salary with this move while also adding a solid center option in Brandon Clarke, who could help address their concerns at the big man position.
Atlanta would add two second-round picks to take on the Cole Anthony contract into one of their TPEs.
The biggest question mark in this trade is the Grizzlies. Taking on Holiday’s contract may not be something they are interested in right now. They just shed Bane’s deal, so adding long-term money could go against the direction they hope to be moving in.
At the same time, Holiday would help them double down on defense, and they would still have three of the picks they added in the Bane trade, including the Phoenix Suns’ 2026 pick, which could sneakily be very valuable.
That said, this trade only makes sense if the Grizzlies are still interested in trying to compete in the West. If not, they probably wouldn’t be interested.
