Plenty of seats available as Chelsea faces LAFC in Atlanta

Monday's game between Chelsea and LAFC in Atlanta was the kind of scene FIFA Club World Cup organizers had feared.

Despite the match featuring an iconic global side and a team from the host country, there were swaths of empty seats at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

There were fears over ticket sales in the lead-up to the tournament, which has proved controversial among players and fans who haven't necessarily been thrilled about another competition right after most league seasons ended.

But attendance for the opening days of the Club World Cup had generally been solid, including 80,000 fans turning up at the Rose Bowl for Sunday's game between PSG and Atlético Madrid.

But Monday's game in Atlanta was a different scene entirely. The game's 3 p.m. kickoff time on a weekday clearly didn't help, nor did the inflated ticket prices.

The match also featured LAFC playing thousands of miles from where most of its fans live. By contrast, MLS sides Inter Miami and the Seattle Sounders have both already played games in their respective home markets.

The announced attendance for Chelsea's game against LAFC was 22,137, less than a third of Mercedes-Benz Stadium's capacity.

Whatever the reason, there were no shortage of observations over the dismal attendance at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
