Leicester City and Sunderland eye Leeds United man, asking price set at £3-4m - Report

Leeds United are looking for a buyer for Sam Greenwood this summer, and they could have one in Leicester City following their relegation.

The Whites remain tasked with balancing their finances in the Premier League for next season, which could lead to a few sales of players previously bought on smaller fees.

Those loaned out in the EFL during 24/25 aren’t likely to stand any chance of being part of the plans in July and should already be looking to secure themselves another move away from Elland Road.

Sam Greenwood could leave Leeds United to join Leicester City

Sam Greenwood is one of those players expected to leave the club in some capacity this summer, off the back of successive loans elsewhere in the Championship with Middlesbrough and then Preston.

Both sides had the option to make their loan a permanent signing, Boro’s reported at £1.5million, but opted against retaining Greenwood.

Now, according to the Daily Mail, Leicester City and Sunderland could be the latest sides vying for his signature.

Leicester are heading into the Championship following their relegation under Ruud van Nistelrooy, and are well aware of the 23-year-old’s dead ball ability after his free-kick stunner against the Foxes while on loan at the Riverside in 23/24.

As for Sunderland, they could reunite with the attacking midfielder after seeing him depart during his youth for Arsenal, before he joined Leeds in the summer of 2020.

How much are Leeds asking for to sell Greenwood this summer?

It seems fairly obvious that Greenwood, along with Joe Gelhardt and Darko Gyabi, is surplus to requirements under Daniel Farke.

The YEP previously reported that all three would be available for transfer this summer, with all three commanding fees in the region of £3-4million.

Greenwood joined from the Emirates for a £1.5million fee, and penned a contract extension in the summer of 2022 simultaneously with Gelhardt, with Greenwood’s running for a final 12 months into 2026.

Leeds United could do with getting Greenwood and co off the wages

The wages that Greenwood and Gelhardt agreed to in their new contracts in 2022 are likely to be quite big relative to their roles at the club.

So, if a club is willing to sign him and take him off our hands, we need to be very accommodating in making that happen.

A Championship move makes most sense for the next step in Greenwood’s career – having shown inconsistencies in his last two loans, heading to Sunderland in the top flight would be an odd deal.
