Arsenal and Manchester United have battled each other over key targets for decades gone by.
Now, the targeting of Viktor Gyokeres by both clubs has reignited this battle as both sides strive to earn Gyokeres’ signature.
Both clubs are in desperate need of a striker this summer with Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta reported to be targeting a number of players to strengthen their squads ahead of the 2025-26 season.
One of the players that Arsenal have been reported to be targeting is Benjamin Sesko who has been a long-term target for the Gunners and even came close to joining Arsenal last summer.
Arsenal were then reported to have enquired again in this year’s January transfer window.
However, RB Leipzig were stubborn stating that they had no intention of selling the striker.
This, combined with Arsenal’s want to negotiate again this summer pushed them away from pursuing the striker in January.
The Slovenian international has embraced success this season scoring 26 goals this season which is an improvement on the 23 goals he was able to accumulate during the course of last season.
Furthermore, at only 22 years old, he fits the ideal age profile for Arsenal in terms of financial and technical growth as he still holds the potential to grow and become a even better striker than he currently is.
However, now the appointment of new sporting director Andrea Berta has resulted in Viktor Gyokeres’ stock rising, with BBC sources indicating that there is considerable internal backing for a move for the 27 year old.
This comes despite the foundations and groundwork for the Sesko deal being in place already.
This could mean that the North London side move towards pursuing a deal for Viktor Gyokeres and with Gyokeres reported to be interested in a potential deal, this could mean that the potential of signing the Swedish international would increase for Arsenal whilst consequently wiping out the efforts of Manchester United to sign the striker.
This may lead United to turn to alternative options such as Victor Osimhen and Joao Pedro as they look to construct a squad good enough to compete for Europe next season.
