Chelsea opened their Club World Cup proceedings on a high note by beating LAFC 2-0 in Atlanta, thanks to Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernadez. The victory placed the Premier League team at the top of Group D early on and also introduced young striker Liam Delap into action.
His precise cross added further delight to the Blues in an already one-sided event. The game was lit up in the 34th minute when Neto sent his effort past Hugo Lloris, following an incredible through-ball from Nicolas Jackson. The Blues went from there with assured possession and relentless harassment, breaking down the MLS side’s defence.
LAFC’s spasmodic threats were best encapsulated by poor attempts from close range. Otherwise, at no point was Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez troubled in his goal. Blues’ center-midfield duo Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia ran the game, dictating the pace and marshaling the defense effectively.
The knockout blow arrived in the 79th minute. Substitute Delap marked his Chelsea debut with a floated, pinpoint cross into the area. Enzo Fernandez was quickest to it with a rather calm finish to double the lead and wrap up the game.
The game was played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, before some 22,000 fans. The Blues have now become the first English club to host an American club in this competition. Next, they will meet Flamengo on June 20 in Philadelphia.
Enzo Maresca Delighted With Liam Delap Debut
Enzo Maresca had good reason to be delighted with Liam Delap’s performance after the Blues signed him from Ipswich Town this summer. The manager said on Channel Five:
“The good thing about Liam is he knows the way we want to play so the process is quite quick. Also we gave a chance to Dario Essugo which is another player we have, so it’s good for both of them.”
Delap also said:
“It’s a really happy feeling for me. I’m so excited to be here and to play my first game and be able to contribute is a good feeling.”
