Boldness is born out of necessity: The three newly promoted clubs all go searching for value for money talent to try and bolster their chances of staying in the Premier League. It does make them less risk-averse as their Chairmen chuck money at players looking for that magic bullet to reinforce a newly promoted team – sometimes more in hope than expectation.
Certainly that would seem to apply to the trio rushing in, cheque books open, for former Hammers target Japhet Tangana. The Millwall defender has already a stint at Tottenham on his CV and so is no stranger to Premier League football. His budget release clause – £1.2 million – makes him worthy of a punt to bolster a newly promoted defence.
It seems the Hammers, who were reportedly considering him last winter, have been turned off the defender – how well he’d sit between £40 million Max Kilman and £37 million Jean Clair Todibo is questionable but presumably the metrics used by Kyle Macaulay haven’t shown him in too fine a light. Quite possibly the risk of a mediocre championship centre-back adapting is seen too big for the Irons to countenance.
