Leicester City could offer Sam Greenwood the first team opportunities that are expected to be hard to come by at Leeds United.
That’s according to the Daily Mail who say the Foxes are ‘weighing up a move’ for the young forward as they look to bolster an attack hugely weakened by the departure of Jamie Vardy.
The 23-year-old has one season left on his contract, which he signed after Marcelo Bielsa took him to Elland Road from Arsenal’s academy, and could be surplus to requirements as Leeds prepare for another crack at the Premier League.
The story claims Greenwood, who spent last season on loan with Preston North End, is ‘keen to continue getting regular game-time’.
Greenwood played 45 times for North End last term, scoring seven goals and adding three assists playing in a variety of midfield positions, as a second striker or even a centre forward. He bagged four in 14 playing up front.
Overall he has scored ten in 76 Championship matches for Preston and during a season-long loan at Middlesbrough in 2023/24. His hometown club Sunderland are named as potential rivals for his signature.
North End manager Paul Heckingbottom was pleased with Greenwood's contribution, even when Preston's season fell apart: People always think, and I've had this with owners as well, if they've not played every minute of every game, they've been a failure.
"You need good people in your squad, you need them to step up. Sam started on fire, big threat for us, dropped off a little bit, but we've used him every time he's been available."
A fee is not cited but City’s shortcomings in attack are well-documented and will only be exacerbated by Vardy’s exit. Odsonne Edouard, who didn’t contribute anything last season has returned to Crystal Palace, while there is uncertainty about the future of Patson Daka.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post Preston have the option to make Greenwood’s loan permanent with the value expected to be around £1.5million.
City have also been linked with Panathinaikos striker Fotis Ioannidis.
