Leeds United rivals make final Chris Wilder sack decision as Sheffield United announcement due

Sheffield United are reportedly set to part ways with manager Chris Wilder after missing out on promotion to the Premier League. The Blades were battling Leeds United for promotion to the top flight for much of the campaign last season.

The Whites managed to win the Championship title and clinch automatic promotion to the Premier League in the process. Leeds were joined by Burnley in being automatically promoted to the Premier League, leaving Sheffield United to take part in the play-offs.

After reaching the final, the Blades were beaten 2-1 by Sunderland and will now have another season in the Championship after missing out on promotion.

The Telegraph have reported that Sheffield United have now decided to sack Wilder, it it being claimed that the Blades will announce their decision within the next 24 hours.

COH Sports - the new ownership group at Bramall Lane after completing a takeover in December last year - are reported to have made their decision with the aim of appointing their own manager ahead of next season.

Wilder is reported to be "bitterly disappointed" by the decision, but it's also been claimed that exit is "amicable" between both parties. The 57-year-old had been in charge of Sheffield United since 2023, in what was his second spell as the club's manager.

Several names have been listed in the report as potentially being under consideration by the Blades, although no clear favourite has emerged at the time of writing. Former Wolves manager Gary O'Neil and ex-Hull City boss Ruben Selles are mentioned as possible contenders, but as things stand there is no favourite for the role in the Bramall Lane dugout.

After the Wembley defeat, a statement penned by the Blades' directors read: "The entire organisation, our staff, players, and everyone behind the scenes performed tremendously to reach Wembley in the first place.

"We overcame a points deduction and an injury crisis, and this spirit and resilience will continue to serve us well."

Wilder himself had his say after the loss in the capital, saying "It wasn't something we wanted but we go again and from every low there comes a high."
