'The most important thing for me...': Lukasz Fabianski reveals his transfer plan after West Ham …

Lukasz Fabianski is clearly in no rush as the Poland international awaits his next step following the expiration of his contract at Premier League outfit West Ham United.

OK, a brand new career in basketball appears rather fanciful – NBA fanatic Fabianski was spotted this week taking part in a charity match alongside former Borussia Dortmund winger Jakub Blaszczykowski – but the veteran goalkeeper believes his life in professional sport is not quite over yet.

Celebrating his 40th birthday in April, Lukasz Fabianski has been released by West Ham alongside the similarly-experienced Aaron Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal and Danny Ings.

The former Arsenal glovesman was not given the goodbye he wanted – Graham Potter left him on the bench for West Ham United’s final home game of the 2024/25 season – but, in an ideal world, Fabianski will still be plying his trade in England come the start of the new campaign.

Ideally, in London.

Lukasz Fabianski confirms his London plan after West Ham United exit

Legia Warsaw contacted Fabianski a few weeks ago regarding a potential return to the club where he claimed the Polish Ekstraklasa title all the way back in 2006, earning himself a chance at Arsenal in the process.

Fabianski plans to stay in English football ‘for the next few years’, however, turning down that approach from Legia sporting director Michal Zewkalow.

“I spoke with Michal and thanked him very much for his interest,” Fabianski explains in a new interview with Sport. “However, I have repeated many times that the most important thing for me is my son’s development.”

The one-time Swansea City guarder understandably has major reservations about uprooting his young family, meaning a potential return to his homeland can wait.

“[My son] has adapted very well to the conditions [in London], so we do not want to risk harming him in any way,” Fabianski adds. “It is known that the education system in England is very different from that in Poland. Of course, he has his own group of colleagues and friends.

“I think that a huge change would be too much of a risk for now. We are very happy with his development, he is a priority for us, so now we are making all decisions with our child in mind.

“I’m at a stage in my professional life where I’m not in a hurry. I’m calmly analysing everything, enjoying my free time. We’ll see what life brings. I don’t have to rush anymore.”

Premier League clubs in goalkeeper market as West Ham eye Aaron Ramsdale

At the age of 40, Fabianski may struggle to find regular first-team football in England’s capital. But, with many Premier League clubs these days keen to bring in highly-experienced back-up options to act as second or third choice, there could potentially be a place for Fabianski somewhere in the city.

A contentious switch to Tottenham Hotspur may be a possibility, with both Fraser Forster and Alfie Whiteman due to become free agents. Further afield, Everton are set to let go of both Joao Virginia and Asmir Begovic, while former England international John Ruddy is leaving Newcastle United.

In terms of potential replacements, West Ham talked with Southampton about Aaron Ramsdale at the beginning of July.

Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu is not closing the door to English football, while one pundit over in Denmark suggests West Ham should raid Leicester City for Mads Hermansen.
