With the summer transfer window now back open, Manchester United are expected to step up their efforts in their quest to sign Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo.
United registered their interest in the Cameroon international a fortnight ago and saw an opening bid worth £55million turned down. It is understood United offered £45m up front and £10m in add-ons.
The 25-year-old's stock is currently high after scoring 20 Premier League goals for Brentford in the 2024/25 campaign. United view him as the second of three attacking signings they would like to make this summer.
Matheus Cunha has already been added to United's attack, arriving from Wolves last week after his £62.5m release clause was triggered, and they still want to add Mbeumo and an out-and-out centre-forward.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News last week, United would like to sign Mbeumo as soon as possible so he can report to Carrington for the start of pre-season training next month. However, it has become apparent that Tottenham Hotspur are also in the hunt for his signature.
Spurs' interest in the former Troyes man should come as no surprise amid the fact they appointed Thomas Frank as their new head coach last week after extracting him from the Gtech Community Stadium. Frank worked with Mbeumo for six years in west London.

Despite his former boss being keen on a reunion in north London, Mbeumo has informed confidants that United, just as they were two weeks ago, remain his preferred choice. He has his sights set on playing at Old Trafford and making a name for himself under Ruben Amorim.
United lost to Spurs in last month's Europa League final, of course, meaning the Londoners secured Champions League qualification for next season at their expense. Champions League football is the holy grail for most players, meaning it would be easy to understand why Mbeumo could favour a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over Old Trafford.
However, despite United being unable to offer any form of European football in 2025/26, Mbeumo remains keen to move to M16. And it is players of that mindset and mentality United need to recruit this summer.

Furthermore, it has highlighted Amorim was right that any player will always dream of playing for United's because of their history and heritage.
Speaking in April, Amorim said: "It's Manchester United. What I feel is that there's a lot of players that want to play for our club.
"I know that if you look at our club at the moment it looks like sometimes with all the problems with the staff, people going, changing coach, the results, it looks like a little bit of a problem at the moment. But we have a clear idea.
"That is the easiest part to explain to a player. And then it's Manchester United. Everybody wants to play for Manchester United."
There is no denying the fact the 2024/25 campaign was a forgettable period in United's history, but one bad season cannot undo all of the pomp and pageantry that comes with arguably the biggest sporting institution in the world.

United will always appeal to players and they have clearly caught Mbeumo's attention. The fact he is so keen on joining United at this current juncture is also a positive reflection of his character and mentality.
