Jose Mourinho deals major blow to Wolves after zoom meeting with £26m star - journalist

Wolves are overhauling their transfer strategy this summer as they aim to replace two of their best players.

Domenico Teti was announced as the new technical director on Monday after Matt Hobbs left his position as sporting director.

Teti will work closely with manager Vitor Pereira and director of player recruitment Matt Jackson to complete transfers.

Wolves fans were also delighted that super agent Jorge Mendes is back involved with the football club, using his long list of contacts to attract talent to Molineux.

One of those is Celta Vigo winger Fer Lopez, who is closing in on a move to Wolves, while another target could join Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.

Jose Mourinho has held a zoom meeting with Wolves target Evann Guessand

Wolves identified Evann Guessand as a potential replacement for Matheus Cunha this summer, following his departure to Manchester United.

It was claimed that Wolves had launched a bid for Guessand, with OGC Nice reportedly setting a £25 million asking price for the 23-year-old.

Sadly, Pereira was dealt a blow in his pursuit of the Ivory Coast international as Champions League side Juventus entered the race for Guessand.

That left the Old Gold with a low possibility of signing the centre-forward, and now, reports of Wolves submitting a bid are wide of the mark.

According to Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett, Jose Mourinho held a Zoom meeting with Guessand on Monday after Fenerbahce launched a £26 million bid for the attacker.

Dorsett claims that Wolves are monitoring the situation, but worryingly, the asking price could be ‘too high’ for them with other targets at full-back and in central midfield.

Fosun’s transfer strategy could come back to bite Wolves once more

In previous windows, Wolves have seen their best players leave Molineux without directly replacing them.

Max Kilman and Pedro Neto were both sold for a combined £100 million in 2024, yet the Old Gold were unsuccessful in their mission to find a replacement, with the deadline day signing of Carlos Forbs turning out to be a disaster.

As Rayan Ait-Nouri and Cunha amassed 32 goal involvements in 2024/25, supporters will be worried that history could repeat itself, especially as Lopez has only made 20 senior appearances.

Although Wolves have overhauled their recruitment team and made a conscious effort to give Pereira more control, the same issues continue to stare them in the face.

Fosun operating with a self-sustaining model, most notably failing to invest adequate funds into the playing squad, has seen the Wanderers trend close to the relegation places in recent seasons.

So, news of Guessand costing too much for Wolves is something that won’t please the fans, who just want to see big money spent and ambition shown for once.
