Alejandro Garnacho's journey at Manchester United appears to be heading to a sour ending.

Despite the winger's undeniable skill and potential, disciplinary problems have repeatedly risked his future at the club. Now, that threat has materialised into a stark reality.

It's particularly regrettable given that Ruben Amorim and Garnacho made efforts to make it work. After Amorim excluded both Garnacho and Marcus Rashford from the Manchester derby squad in December, Rashford didn't play for United again and was promptly loaned out to Aston Villa.

While Garnacho featured in every match following the derby win, except for the final day victory over Villa. Even though he was asked to play out of position as a No. 10, Garnacho seemed to be an integral part of Amorim's team.

The expected inconsistency and occasional lack of composure in front of goal from a 20-year-old was obvious, but it appeared that Garnacho and Amorim were on track to build a solid working relationship. That is, until things went wrong.

After being named as one of only four players deemed 'untouchable' by the club last year, Garnacho has now been informed that he can leave if an acceptable offer comes in. United turned down a £40million bid from Napoli for Garnacho during the January transfer window, and they are expected to hold out for a higher fee than what Napoli proposed.

United reportedly upped their price tag for the winger to £70m, but early signs in the transfer window make it seem unlikely that the Red Devils will receive an offer at such an amount.

From being touted as the future holder of the iconic No. 7 shirt and the spearhead of United's attack, the Argentine is now a player the club is willing to let go.

Amorim isn't the first United gaffer to have been disappointed by Garnacho, and while some leeway should be given considering his youth, there comes a time when you have to make a stand and decide it's in everyone's best interest to part ways.

Garnacho's departure, if the club do receive an adequate bid for him, was unexpected, but it might just be the right move.
