Exclusive: Man Utd scouting Portuguese wonderkid during Euro U21, Ineos believe he's a 'good fit'

Manchester United’s transfer business has only just begun, with Ineos eyeing up several additional moves on top of Matheus Cunha.

The 2024-25 season was a complete disaster for Manchester United, resulting in a worst-ever Premier League finish.

To turn things around, Ineos are going to have to have a brilliant summer in the transfer market with United expected to make four key signings, while further moves might be made dependent on sales.

This will take a lot of transfer business from Ineos, with Matheus Cunha the only first-team signing completed so far, while there are thought to be at least two others being worked on right now.

There are only a couple of positions that won’t be on the agenda this summer for Ruben Amorim, with the attack being prioritised right now. However, there will remain a desire for the midfield, wing-backs, and goalkeeper to be added to.

Now, scouts have been over in Slovakia watching the U21 European Championships, with one Portuguese phenomenon being followed by United.

Manchester United still considering Roger Fernandes

With United going all out to sign two brilliant number 10s this summer, the previously targeted right wing-back role seems to have been forgotten in the shuffle this summer.

Earlier this year, United were chasing Geovany Quenda, before he agreed to join Chelsea, and this also saw alternatives linked. Braga youngster Roger Fernandes was therefore linked with United as he was effectively an identical talent to Quenda, just a year older.

Now, United in Focus understands after talking with Graeme Bailey that the club are still considering Fernandes as an option.

“We understand that United like Fernandes a lot and believe that he would be a good fit into the Ruben Amorim system, which means United have been keeping tabs on him over in Slovakia.

“As Fernandes plays for Portugal U21 in the European Championship, United are following him closely; however, there are doubts around whether a wing-back is on the cards this summer.

Bailey explains, “Things have changed at United with their targets indicating Amad will be played as a right wing-back from this point forward, and in that case, I don’t think Fernandes can be seen as a priority.

“However, United are doing options and still like him, while the fact that he can play in a number of positions also appeals.”

There is a lot of talent on show for Portugal in the 2025 U21 European Championships, and on either wing, they are deadly with Quenda and Fernandes.

At the weekend, Fernandes and Quenda destroyed Poland 5-0, with the former assisting two and the latter scoring twice, with an assist also added.

Everyone knows about Quenda, but this was a real statement performance from Fernandes, who had a stellar season with Braga and is now catching the eye on the brightest stage of U21 football, despite playing just 45 minutes.

Fernandes played left-wing in this game, which shows his versatility, as he could effectively provide depth to either side of the pitch as needed.
