Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has confirmed that he will be remaining away from the dugout for the time being. The 39-year-old has been away from football management since the end of December after leaving Plymouth Argyle by mutual consent.

Since stepping out of the limelight and into the studio, Rooney has been a regular on Amazon Prime, Match of the Day, BBC Sport's football coverage and Gary Neville's Stick to Football Podcast. The former forward dusted off his boots on Sunday to play in the SoccerAid charity match at Old Trafford as he rolled back the years to get himself on the scoresheet.

Since retiring in 2021, he has had managerial stints at Derby County, MLS side DC United, Birmingham City before his 25-game run on the south coast.

Rooney left both Pride Park and the American club before he was dismissed by both Birmingham and Plymouth with his stint at St Andrew's lasting less than three months.

There have been a host of managerial dismissals across the Football League pyramid during the closed season but Rooney hasn't been linked with many posts.

"Obviously just doing some TV work at the minute, so that’s what I’m doing," he told talkSPORT when asked about his future in the dugout.

"I’m enjoying it.

"So, that’s where I’ll be."

Prior to his appointment at Home Park, Rooney was linked with a sensational move into crossover boxing - which would have seen him fight influencers.

It was claimed that the former United talisman held talks with Eddie Hearn, as well as Misfits Boxing, backed by YouTuber KSI and promoter Kalle Sauerland, however, he said last February that his intentions were getting back to the tactics board.

“Never know. No, erm they’ve been in touch and asked the question but at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing," said the 39-year-old.

“No they’ve just been in touch to fight.

"There’s been a few, that Misfits has been in and that’s been all over the news or whatever, .

“My focus is getting back into management.

"I’ve seen over the last few days about the headlines but main focus is getting back into football.”
