Much was made of Michael Edwards return as Fenway Sports Group (FSG) CEO of Football.

One major part of his role was going to be helping the Boston group construct a multi-club model.

FSG had previously resisted following the multi-club trend pioneered by Manchester City’s owners, who now control 13 clubs globally under the City Football Group umbrella.

This fresh interest in Getafe isn’t FSG’s first in their multi-club pursuit.

In July 2024, both FSG and French outfit Bordeaux confirmed negotiations were underway for the Liverpool owners to purchase the troubled French club – but stadium rental concerns pulled the plug on that deal.

And it has now been revealed by Spanish outlet AS that FSG is looking to acquire La Liga side Getafe.

Reporter Manuel Torres adds to the story that FSG see Getafe as a good opportunity to realise these aspirations:

“The American company wants to expand into the world of football and they have set their sights on Spain.”

“Specifically, at Getafe. The choice for the blue team is clear; a project consolidated in the elite in the 21st century, a new stadium with the works already started, the proximity to the capital and the intention of Ángel Torres to leave the presidency when the new Coliseum takes shape.”

He adds that there has been some preliminary talks between the Liverpool principle owners and the decision-makers at Getafe:

“At the moment, only a study and some contacts have taken place between club and company while waiting for the progress of the works that may end with Getafe being part of one of the most important groups in world sport.”

According to the report, Getafe’s president, Ángel Torres, has repeatedly stated his intention to step down and sell the club by 2027 at the latest.

He is determined to secure the club’s future by finding a buyer who is not only financially capable but also deeply knowledgeable about football – a bracket that FSG matches.

Ultimately, the president wants to make sure Getafe is left in trustworthy and experienced hands.

The club’s ambitious new stadium project, which is now underway, stands out as a major draw for FSG.

This project includes the construction of a modern Coliseum stadium expected to be completed by late 2027 or early 2028, with enhanced seating, VIP amenities, and a new design.

Additionally, a new Sports City development next to the stadium will further strengthen Getafe’s training and youth academy infrastructure.
