The 20-year-old Belgium and Lyon left winger Malick Fofana is one of Europe’s most promising young forwards, and the pacy, under-sized dribbler has been attracting plenty of interest from Chelsea and [Manchester United](https://thebusbybabe.sbnation.com) this summer because of it.
Somewhat surprisingly, though, the latest transfer chatter out of France by way of L’Equipe’s typically reliable and Leon-connected journalist Hugo Guillemet has [Liverpool](https://liverpooloffside.sbnation.com/) also in the mix for the player and becoming an increasingly likely destiantion.
The surprise, if it isn’t obvious, comes from the fact that as a pacy, under-sized (he measures 1.69M compared to Luis Diaz’ 1.8M and Diogo Jota’s 1.78M) dribbler Fofana is very much a left winger and not a player who could conceivably fit at striker.
And Liverpool already have two high quality players for that position in Cody Gakpo and the aforementioned Diaz, who has been linked with Barcelona but looks increasingly likely to stay with the La Liga giants pushing hard to sign Bilbao’s Nico Williams.
Even if the sourcing on this rumour perhaps seems sounder than most, that makes us skeptical and tips us to thinking this chatter is coming from Lyon in the hopes of convincing Chelsea or United to hurry up and meet their €50M (£43M) asking price.
We don’t expect much of anything to come of the Fofana chatter, then, but it can’t be ignored completely and if there were to be unexpected movement on the Diaz front in the coming days it could be Fofana would make for a plausible Liverpool target.
