Marcus Rashford had been told that he has missed out on a perfect move after Rúben Amorim chose to exile him from the Manchester United squad.
Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United future looks to be firmly cemented elsewhere after Rúben Amorim deemed him surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
After 426 appearances for United, scoring 138 goals for the club and providing 77 assists in that time, the Academy graduate seems to be on his way out.
After falling out with Amorim due to a perceived lack of effort in training, Rashford was loaned to Aston Villa for six months during the 2024/25 campaign.
Despite his good form in Birmingham, Villa opted against activating their £40 million buy option, and Rashford is now on the market this summer for a similar fee.
Rashford has already missed out on perfect transfer
There has been considerable speculation surrounding the left winger’s next move this summer, with the player himself seeking a transfer that will enhance his chances of playing in the World Cup with England next summer.
Football journalist Henry Winters has pointed out that, despite Rashford’s desire to join Barcelona, he should have instead considered a move to Tottenham. However, with former Bayern Munich wantaway winger Mathys Tel having signed for Spurs for £30 million, the chance has now faded.
“Rashford needs to go to a club which plays with natural width, not with wing-backs, not with sort of number 10s,” Winter told Sky Sports.
“And I mean Barcelona, I’m sure he’d love Barcelona, but Rafinha has been one of their players of the season, and Rafinha is in better form than Marcus Rashford. So look, he’s a very talented player.
“Obviously, Thomas Tuchel likes him, whether that’s because of the two games he had for Manchester United, where he did so well against PSG’s defence when Tuchel was there. But he obviously likes him, and you know, that ferocious pace hasn’t gone.
“I always thought that if he was going to stay in England, that he would go to a club like Tottenham Hotspur, but they’ve got Mathys Tel, who’s playing out there because Heung-min Son’s powers are fading. Rashford would have been very good on the left.”
Rashford will have to take a pay cut to leave United
Another reason why United is keen to finalise Rashford’s transfer this summer is that his current wage package, above £300,000 a week, is a significant drain on the club’s resources.

When he was loaned to Villa, United still paid around 25% of his wages for that period, and will go back to paying the full amount once his temporary Villa contract expires at the end of June.
Continuing, Winter explained that Rashford must look to take a significant wage cut if he wants to secure a move to a club that will allow him to prove himself to England boss Tuchel over the next 12 months.
“But look, as ever with modern footballers, it comes down to money,” Winter continued. “And I just think that Marcus Rashford is going to have to take a substantial cut if he wants to be playing, and if he wants to seize this opportunity to go to the World Cup.”
