Chelsea will demand £25m transfer fee as Aston Villa linked player requests clarity

Aston Villa linked goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic has reportedly indicated to parent club Chelsea that he intends to play regularly next season, be that at Stamford Bridge or elsewhere, and he has requested clarity on their plans ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Petrovic spent last season on loan at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg who, under Liam Rosenior, enjoyed an impressive campaign. Certainly Rosenior valued Serbian Petrovic's contribution and has since tipped him to go on and have a remarkable career.

The goalie has plenty of competition under Enzo Maresca; when he returns, along with fellow loaned out stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga who has been at Bournemouth, who is set to join Arsenal. Chelsea already have quartet Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Mike Penders and Gabriel Slonina. They recently sold fringe keeper Marcus Bettinelli to Manchester City.

Still, plenty of competition lies in front of Petrovic, if he is to play regular and assert himself as the Blues' outright first choice keeper ahead of their new season, which'll also involve a Champions League stint. Chelsea, it's reported by the Athletic, will be happy for him to go for £25m provided he can find himself a club who are willing to fund a move.

Otherwise, the player himself, who has seven international caps, can return to Strasbourg later in the window in the event that none of those interested clubs - some of whom are said to be in the Premier League - come forward with a suitable offer.

Petrovic, 25, joined Chelsea from MLS side New England Revolution a couple of years ago and made 31 appearances, including 23 in the Premier League, in 2023-24. At that point, under Mauricio Pochettino, he was just about the club's first choice keeper.

Villa are in the market for another goalkeeper this summer, irrespective of whether Emiliano Martinez remains at the club or not; the Argentina international has gathered interest from big clubs around Europe, but understudy Robin Olsen has already left on a free transfer and the Villans are set to add to that department of their squad regardless.
