Rumours surround the future of Anthony Gordon are back on the menu after claims that Liverpool have retained their interest in the forward - but some fans in the Chronicle Live comments section have said it would be a big mistake to entertain even a massive bid for their man.

Gordon wasn't able to contribute much towards the back end of the season, with Harvey Barnes seizing his moment during Gordon's suspension back in March. Gordon claimed nine goals and seven assists for the season as Newcastle United managed to fend off rival clubs for a Champions League spot.

A claim emerged on Sunday that Liverpool boss Arne Slot would be willing to drop £100million on Gordon, another big-money move after the Reds close in on a £116million deal for top German talent Florian Wirtz.

While the Magpies' club hierarchy are cool on Gordon's status in the squad, it would be a big cash injection to improve the quality and depth of the team ahead of a busy season to come.

Some people would be happy to take that kind of money if a deal like that ever materialised. Reader Petrus says: "Wouldn't be surprised if Gordon signs for Liverpool.

"As it is, we already have Barnes and a good right winger in Cordero, who Eddie needs to use and develop this coming season, with Livramento moving to RWB which solves 2 positions.

Commenter DurbanSkyslot writes: "Depends whether Liverpool came with a big enough offer for us to consider. Everyone has their price and we could have a decent war chest to strengthen the squad.

"Ideally we wouldn't want to lose Gordon but player trading is a reality in the current climate with a big sale really helping us out in a PSR world."

ENP agrees: "I'll drive him to Merseyside for £100m. Imagine what we could do with £100m to reinvest on top of this summer's budget. No-brainer, surely? Unless we replace him with Joao Pedro, in which case I'll keep Gordon thanks."

Johnsky5 writes: "100m would be nice for an inconsistent Gordon, but can’t see it happening."

Others see Gordon as a part of the future of the club, despite being overshadowed by Barnes late on in the season after he struggled to regain form following injury and suspension.

Plum4444 says: "We can't sell Anthony Gordon. Selling your best player to team you are hoping to compete against makes no sense. And how are we going to replace Anthony Gordon? He is still young and learning. Yes, he struggled a bit in the last few games. But overall Anthony Gordon had class season.

"No one better than him in the Premier League in his position, I rest my case. Don't sell him Eddie, it will be worst decision you make."

Taz1892 writes: "Need to keep your best players and Gordon in my opinion has been class. Yes he's had a couple of off-days but in general he's been an outstanding young player for us."

Gannett says: "Anthony isn’t going anywhere. I doubt Eddie will let that happen. Gordon is settled at Newcastle as he has already stated many times!"
