Wolves could make a clever bid to tempt Liverpool into a sale, Stan Collymore has exclusively told Birmingham World.
Wolves are on the hunt for a new attacking midfielder to fill the boots of record departure Matheus Cunha and Elliott, who is weighing up his options this summer, is on the shortlist. Albeit not quite as attacking-minded as Cunha, Elliott is seen as being just as creative and could be a great option to help propel Vitor Pereira’s side into top-half contention.
Other options are being considered as Wolves are expected to be patient in replacing Cunha, as well as left wing-back Rayan Ait-Nouri. The £96 million raised by their sales must be spent as efficiently as possible, not only on players in their positions but also to strengthen in other areas.
Wolves should lowball Liverpool demands to sign key player
Iconic former Premier League striker Stan Collymore believes Elliott would be a shrewd addition but only if Wolves are to heavily lowball Liverpool’s high asking price. Clubs often charge over the odds for players who are of supreme importance but Elliott isn’t one of those due to Liverpool’s vast options in his position, soon to be grown by the imminent £115 million signing of Bayer Leverkusen megastar Florian Wirtz.
When asked if Wolves should meet Liverpool’s demands to sign Elliott, Collymore exclusively told Birmingham World: “No, I think half of that and then you’ve got a player. The issue with Harvey Elliott isn’t the fact that he can play or he can create, it’s his injury problem.
“He misses games, he had a very nasty injury very early on his development at Liverpool. With the likes of Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, he was never going to nail a place in the first team. And now with Wirtz coming in, that fills the central creativity hub as well.
“If Wolves can get him for £20 million plus add-ons, then that’s a good deal for all parties. Absolutely no way is he worth £50 million, or even £40 million. If it was a £30 million all-round deal with a base figure of 15-to-20 with add-ons for performances, I think Wolves get a good deal – I think Liverpool get a good deal.”
Could Wolves face competition for Harvey Elliott?
The Old Gold aren’t the only ones tracking Elliott as fellow Premier League clubs Newcastle United, Fulham and Brighton & Hove Albion have all been linked in recent months. Borussia Dortmund were rumoured to be interested before they signed Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland, too, while Leverkusen were reportedly keen but have now backed out of any potential deal.
Collymore reckons Wolves won’t face any immediate competition to sign Elliott, however. “I don’t think there’s going to be a whole host of buyers coming in at £50 million, no way,” Collymore continued. “He’d be a good signing for Wolves, a good player who needs to play games and needs to find a home.
“It’s a big club with a lot of expectation who have already got some good players there, they just have had some really bad starts to seasons and been crawling their way back. I could absolutely see him doing really well in that Wolves midfield, but absolutely no way for £50 million. You’re looking at half of that plus add-ons.”
