Lukasz Fabianski is looking for a swansong in England at the ripe old age of 40 ahead of officially departing West Ham United.

The Polish goalkeeper was released by West Ham this summer, with his deal officially expiring in 1 July, but he has no plans to retire yet.

There have already been some contract offers on his table, yet it seems he is happy to hold out for the right deal.

Fabianski linked with Charlton Athletic transfer

Fabianski wants to remain in London. He is settled in the capital with his family and doesn’t want to move overseas so late in his career.

He has reportedly turned down a move from Legia Warsaw for this reason.

Now, respected journalist Richard Cawley has reported via X (17 June) that Fabianski has been offered as a goalkeeper option to Charlton Athletic.

The Addicks have just been promoted to the Championship, and could provide competition and knowledge for the club’s existing goalkeepers.

However, Cawley adds that a deal is not likely to happen.

#cafc admirers of Jes Rak-Sakyi but explainer in the piece below about why it it highly unlikely to happen – #cpfc valuation of the attacker is going to be very steep.

Fabianski still has a lot to offer the right team

Fabianski has been a fantastic servant to West Ham ever since signing in 2018. He has made over 200 appearances for the Hammers and deserves plaudits for his time at the club.

Seventeen of those appearances came this season, and he looked as sharp as ever.

At 40 years old, it’s understandable that he wasn’t offered a new contract. Indeed, West Ham are well covered between the sticks, with Alphonse Areola and Wes Foderingham to choose from. Graham Potter may choose to draft in another keeper as well.

That doesn’t mean Fabianski doesn’t have something great to offer one of the Championship’s London sides.

He could arguably do better than Charlton, who have one of the smaller wage bills in the division and look set to be fighting against relegation.

If Watford or QPR are looking for a goalkeeper, they could do far worse than giving Fabianski a call.

The presence of an older experienced goalkeeper as a reserve can provide a lot of value to a number one at any club, particularly those in the lower leagues.

Of course, based on the evidence of last season, Fabianski has the flexibility and reactions to keep going as a number one himself, perhaps for the next year or two.

He was a popular figure at the London Stadium, and fans will certainly hope that he gets the swansong he deserves for a London team.
