Dell Curry reveals the only thing that could end Steph's career

Steph Curry isn’t retiring anytime soon, says his father, Dell Curry. Despite being 37, the Warriors star still loves the game and could play into his 40s. His eventual decision will depend on his physical and mental energy, not his skills.

Stephen Curry may be 37 and entering his 17th NBA season, but retirement? Not yet. According to his father, Dell Curry, the Golden State Warriors superstar still has the fire to compete — and he isn’t nearing the end of the road.

In an interview with DJ Siddiqi of RG Sports, Dell opened up about when Steph might consider stepping away. Rather than focusing on stats or ability, he believes it’ll all come down to whether Steph still has the energy for the grind of NBA preparation.

“I think it’ll come down to—not necessarily his skill, or what he can do in a game,” Dell said. “I think it’s a matter of, can he go through the rigors of preparing himself to play in an NBA season?”

That’s exactly what Dell experienced when he decided to retire himself — not because he couldn’t still play, but because he didn’t have the offseason drive to fully commit.

“I just didn’t feel like I had the energy or effort to work and train throughout the summer. I wouldn’t short myself, my teammates, or the fans. I think that’s what it’ll come down to [for Steph],” he added.

But Steph isn’t close to calling it quits. Not even slightly.

“He still loves the game,” Dell emphasized. “He’s a competitive guy. He wants to win another title, so we’re not even close to that window yet. But when the time comes, I think he’ll make the right decision.”

Curry just wrapped his 16th NBA season and still looks like one of the best players on the floor. Despite suffering a Grade 1 hamstring strain during the Western Conference semifinals against the Timberwolves, his production remained elite — especially after the Warriors added scoring help by acquiring Jimmy Butler.

Steph himself addressed the retirement question in March on 95.7 The Game’s “Steiny & Guru” show.

“Man, I don’t know,” Curry admitted. “I’ve said a lot of different things just based on how I feel that day... It’s a feeling, like, can I dominate a game? Can I play my style for 30-plus minutes? And then you kind of reevaluate every year.”

He signed a one-year, $62.6 million extension last summer that keeps him with the Warriors through the 2026–27 season. While some players decline in their late 30s, Curry’s basketball IQ and historic shooting make him a unique case.

“Absolutely [he can play into his 40s], just because he can shoot the basketball,” Dell said. “Even if you put him in the corner at 40, 41 years old, you have to guard him. That creates space for other guys. If you can shoot, there’s a team that can use you.”
