Idrissa Gana Gueye’s future remains unclear as contract talks with Everton continue.
Gueye’s contract is set to expire at the end of the month, but David Moyes is keen to retain the player he started in every Premier League game since his return to the Toffees.
The 35-year-old’s performances last season belied his age, with Gueye recently excelling for his national team (10 June) as Senegal became the first African team to beat England.
The two parties remain locked in contract negotiations, but the Merseyside club could face complications following a recent development.

Rennes interested in signing Gueye
Talks between Everton and Gueye have hit a stumbling block, as according to journalist Sébastien Denis (17 June), Rennes have joined the race to sign the veteran midfielder.

Gueye’s club statistics over his senior career
Gueye is very familiar with Ligue 1, having played for both Lille and Paris Saint-Germain, and could be tempted to move back to France.
Therefore, ex-Goodison scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – believes that Everton will have to make a substantial offer to Gueye to ward off the interest from Rennes and keep him on Merseyside.
“Everton are trying to agree a new contract with Gueye,” King said.
“However, he could decide to turn down any offer from Everton and join Rennes. Therefore, Everton are going to need to at least offer Gueye more money than he is on now.
“He’s been quite an important player in recent seasons. As a result, the offer will need to be a substantial one to make sure he remains with the club.”
Gueye’s wages are too steep for Everton
There is no doubt that Moyes would benefit from retaining Gueye’s experience and technical qualities in midfield as he looks to guide Everton into a new era away from Goodison Park.
However, the new deal that the midfielder is seeking could cost Everton £125,000-a-week, which is a steep price to pay for a player approaching his 36th birthday.
With the squad’s average age already the second-highest in the Premier League, the Toffees should look at investing that level of money in a younger player who can establish themselves as part of the longer-term future.
