Report: Wolves open talks to sign £4.2m defender who was better in the air than Agbadou in 24/25

Wolves could be set to raid the French market again, with the club apparently opening negotiations over a new centre-back.

Wolves had great success earlier this year when they landed Emmanuel Agbadou and Marshall Munetsi from Reims.

Agbadou was an especially good signing for Wolves, with the Ivorian having a transformative impact on Vitor Pereira’s backline.

But Munetsi was also a good addition, and someone Pereira valued very highly for his tireless running.

Those two players both cost around £16 million each to sign, which shows there is real value to be had with players from the French top-flight.

And now, Wolves are looking at signing another centre-back from Ligue 1.

It has been claimed by Africa Foot that Wolves have opened negotiations over Christopher Wooh of Rennes.

It is noted that the player has become ‘undesirable’ at Rennes, having been demoted to the bench in recent times.

Wooh was an unused substitute in seven of Rennes’ last 10 matches, and was suspended for the final Ligue 1 game against Marseille.

Apparently, Rennes would not oppose Wooh’s departure this summer, and seemingly Wolves feel there’s a deal to be done. But it’s claimed there is also interest from clubs in Turkey.

Wolves would be willing to make an opening offer of around £4.2 million for the centre-back. Rennes could ask for more than this, knowing there is also interest from Trabzonspor.

Fbref data indicates that Wooh was strong in the air last season. He had an aerial duels win rate of 70%, which was higher than Emmanuael Agbadou’s in 2024/25 for Reims and Wolves (58.7%).

He also had slightly higher pass accuracy than the Wolves man (87.1% vs 86.6%).

Wolves could be offloading a centre-back amid Wooh interest

At the moment, Wolves don’t have a pressing need for a new centre-back, so this claim should be taken with a pinch of salt.

But it’s not out of the question that Wolves could be ready to offload one or two of their current options.

Nasser Djiga has not really had much of a look in so far since signing in January, so perhaps he might be lined up for a loan move for 2024/25. The Burkina Faso international has looked raw in a Wolves shirt up to now.

Santiago Bueno has found regular starts hard to come by at times, so perhaps the Uruguay international could end up leaving.

But Yerson Mosquera is returning for Wolves after his serious knee injury, so that’s another reason why it’s surprising to see a centre-back link.
