An interesting new report suggests Boston Celtics great Al Horford could be a potential target for the New York Knicks this summer.
In a new Q&A column on Tuesday, The Athletic Knicks insider James L. Edwards III was asked by one fan, “What free agents are the Knicks targeting this offseason?” Edwards explained that the team will have little wiggle room to make major additions to the roster for next season. But they should have the $5.7 million taxpayer midlevel exception available to them.
While that isn’t a boatload of cash to offer many NBA veterans who will be available in free agency this summer, he did suggest three names he believes New York should, or is already looking to use that midlevel on this summer.
“A couple of names to consider with the taxpayer midlevel exception are Spencer Dinwiddie, Trey Lyles, and Al Horford,” he wrote.

The Knicks could use extra scoring and more front-court depth off the bench next season. Dinwiddie and Lyles would certainly be solid additions for the team this summer. But Horford is a fascinating option who will interest many New York fans.
With the Celtics expected to slash payroll this summer, Horford will not return to the franchise he spent seven memorable seasons with — over two stints. At 39, he is far removed from his prime. But as a safety valve for oft-injured center Mitchell Robinson and replacement for Precious Achiuwa, he makes a lot of sense.
Horford was a solid contributor for Boston this season and is another big man who can stretch the floor. If the team’s next coach prefers to keep the same starting five for the regular season with Karl-Anthony Towns at center, Horford and Robinson could be a formidable duo off the bench. Or he could even be an option to start alongside Towns on limited minutes.
Furthermore, the 18-year NBA veteran is one of the league’s most respected players. His addition to the Knicks locker room would surely be a plus. And with the city having a large Dominican community, the native of Puerto Plata would be welcomed with open arms.
