Fan frustration towards Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS continues to grow as concerns mount over their cost-cutting strategy and lack of ambition in the transfer market.

Many supporters feel the INEOS’ approach has failed to match the scale and prestige of Manchester United.

Especially in a summer expected to define the club’s future.

That discontent has now been compounded by off-field drama, with Tottenham Hotspur initiating legal action against INEOS Automotive Limited.

The dispute is around INEOS’ alleged attempt to prematurely terminate a sponsorship deal two years early, further adding to the mounting scrutiny on Ratcliffe’s leadership.

And now, another major decision from the INEOS chairman is drawing serious attention.

Following a detailed strategic review, INEOS have announced plans according to CHEManager’s report, to permanently exit its long-standing Gladbeck site in Germany.

Located in the northern Ruhr region, the Gladbeck plant has operated since 1954 and is one of the world’s largest phenol and acetone production facilities, with a capacity of 650,000 tonnes per year.

However, the company cited Europe’s soaring energy costs and aggressive CO₂ tax policies as reasons for the move.

Which have rendered the region uncompetitive amid a global market oversupply.

INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe didn’t hold back, stating: “This is the consequence of Europe’s total lack of energy competitiveness and the blind devotion to carbon taxation.

“Which is leading to a mass deindustrialisation across the continent.”

The site, which employs 279 people directly and supports over 1,500 jobs in total, will now enter consultations to ensure a safe and responsible closure as per CHEManager’s report.

Sir Jim’s latest move is unlikely to silence critics.

If anything, it could deepen fears over INEOS’ broader strategy.
