The front office placed a non-exclusive, fully guaranteed $23.4 million franchise tag on Trey Smith in late February, making him the highest-paid interior offensive lineman in NFL history, and he later signed the tender in early March. He actively seeks a long-term contract extension rather than playing on the one-year tag. As a result, Smith did not participate during voluntary OTAs, as many wondered whether he would show up for minicamp.

According to McKenzie Nelson of KSHB 41, Trey Smith attended the first day of mandatory minicamp, avoiding over $100,000 in fines. He will have until July 15 to reach an agreement on a long-term contract. If Smith and the Chiefs don’t agree to an extension, he will remain on the $23.4 million franchise tag and is set to hit free agency in 2026.

Brett Veach hopes to get a deal done soon

“Hopefully we get that done,” Veach said via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “There is no lack of interest, will, or desire on our end. We did have a ton of talk at the Combine. Those conversations have continued on through the owner’s meetings. . . . We’ve exchanged multiple phone calls, multiple emails. My guess is once the draft’s over and our focus is back on taking care of the players that are here . . . I’m sure once things settle down on both ends, we will be able to continue this dialogue and hopefully make some progress there.”
