Ruben Amorim's hidden Man Utd talent needs more exposure in pre-season, his role in 2025/26 campaign can't be overlooked– opinion

Ruben Amorim’s pre-season campaign with Manchester United this summer could be a pivotal moment in the development of one Red Devils talent at Old Trafford.

Manchester United signed off their 2024-25 Premier League campaign in May before Ruben Amorim’s men immediately embarked on their post-season tour of Asia.

Amorim has had the first major opportunity to address the pros and cons of his United first-team squad after the summer transfer window opened in June.

The 40-year-old United manager has seen several players away from Old Trafford this summer after they represented their respective nations on international duty.

But all hands will be on deck for the first-team United players this month for the pre-season tour, an opportunity for Amorim to assess his squad depth and talent.

United’s pre-season campaign begins on 19th July against rivals Leeds United, with the friendly held at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.

Why Ruben Amorim needs to take a closer look at Man Utd midfielder Toby Collyer ahead of the 2025-26 season at Old Trafford

Toby Collyer came through the Manchester United youth academy and the defensive midfielder has been able to secure first-team minutes at Old Trafford in his career.

The 21-year-old Red Devils talent made his debut under Erik ten Hag last August in United’s Community Shield defeat to Manchester City on penalties at Wembley.

Toby Collyer, who arrived at Old Trafford from Brighton in 2022, continued to feature under Erik ten Hag sporadically before the Dutchman was sacked in 2024.

However, the United youth academy product was able to keep his presence in the first team and Ruben Amorim also turned to Collyer during the 2024-25 season.

Collyer made 13 appearances for the Red Devils’ senior team last season and has shown there is long-term development in him at Old Trafford under Amorim.

The United midfielder’s run in the 2024-25 Premier League campaign was curtailed towards the end of last season after he suffered a leg injury in April.

Man Utd’s pre-season campaign is the perfect place for Ruben Amorim to plan ahead with Red Devils talent Toby Collyer

Toby Collyer, who is under contract with United until 2027, now has the opportunity to build on his newfound first-team experience during the pre-season campaign.

Amorim will no doubt rotate his options for the matches on the pre-season tour, but Collyer should be high up on that list for players who need more first-team minutes.

The United manager simply cannot afford to see injuries devastate his midfield in the 2025-26 season and Collyer needs to become an important squad-rotation player.

Amorim has to be ready to make sure that he can rest players for certain cup matches and allow Collyer an opportunity to shine in his tactical system next season.

Christian Eriksen will leave Old Trafford this summer and Kobbie Mainoo‘s season was curtailed by injuries, but Collyer is a viable option for Amorim to use more often.
