Manchester United have a ruthless manager in Ruben Amorim, who has shown multiple times so far during his stint at Old Trafford that he is not afraid to make difficult decisions which has included dropping players from matchday squads.

For the final game of the season against Aston Villa, the ex-Sporting CP manager left out both Alejandro Garnacho and Andre Onana from the squad.

That could have been a clear message to the players that they might not have a future here.

The goalkeeping position in particular has been an area of concern ever since David de Gea left the club. Onana was signed from Inter Milan after an impressive season but his time at the English club has been riddled with errors.

Now, as per Corriere dello Sport, Man Utd now want to sign talented Italian shot-stopper Marco Carnesecchi from Atalanta to potentially replace Andre Onana. The 24-year-old has been impressive for the Serie A side.

In 44 games across all competitions this season, Carnesecchi conceded 45 goals and kept 18 clean sheets.

He has a contract with the Serie A side until 2028 and he is valued at around £34million by Atalanta. That is a fee that Man Utd should be able to afford.

Italy has a track record of producing talented goalkeepers in recent years. Gianluigi Donnarumma has been the number one for the nation for quite some time now and Guglielmo Vicario has also done a good job at Tottenham Hotspur.

The report mentions that United have followed Carnesecchi’s performances for a while now. The last time they signed a goalkeeper from Serie A, he turned out to be a very poor signing but the 23-year-old could turn out to be a solution.

What Carnesecchi’s adds to Man Utd is quality and the ability to define the goalkeeping position for the better part of the next decade.

He has shown enough quality to make the step up to Old Trafford. Let’s wait and see how things play out going forward.
