Mastantuono Played Full 90 Minutes for River Plate in Their Club World Cup Opener

Franco Mastantuono completed the full 90 minutes in River Plate’s 3–1 victory over Urawa Red Diamonds in their opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup. Operating as a right winger in the first half and in more of a central role, the 17-year-old showed a mature display in possession and gradually grew into the game.

He completed 27 of his 31 attempted passes, finishing with an 87% accuracy rate, and created one chance. He posted a combined xG + xA value of 0.18 (0.14 xG, 0.04 xA), with one of his two total shots hitting the target.

Mastantuono received 26% of his passes in and around zone 14, indicating his influence in central attacking areas — particularly in the second half, where he drifted infield more frequently. His most dangerous moment came when he found space in the box and directed a header narrowly wide of the far post.

Off the ball, he maintained his discipline and work rate throughout. He led all players in duels won with 10, showing physical competitiveness despite his age. Of his 18 duels, he won 9 out of 17 on the ground (53%) and was successful in his only aerial contest. He also drew five fouls — the most of any player in the match — and committed one himself. Franco was joint-top in the game for take-ons completed, only one player had more final third touches than him.

While he didn’t register a goal or assist, Mastantuono’s performance was rounded, industrious, and tactically disciplined — contributing quietly to River Plate’s control on the right flank.

Xabi Alonso’s press conference ahead of Real Madrid’s tournament opener vs. Al Hilal was held just after the River Plate game. Xabi was expectedly asked about his opinion on Mastantuono.

“Mastantuono? We’re happy with Franco because he’s a kid with a fantastic present and a brutal future. I was impressed by the conversations I had with him about his ambition and maturity.”—said Xabi Alonso
