Pittsburgh Steelers add new coach for training camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers have added coach Kris Peters to their summer coaching staff ahead of training camp, Peters announced on Tuesday.

Peters landed the opportunity through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship Program. He is the Grambling State running backs coach and recruiting coordinator, and his job with the Bulldogs was his first college gig. At one point with Grambling State, Peters was the inside receivers coach.

In his tweet revealing that he would be going to coach under Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin for the summer, Peters noted his father was a Steelers fan.

“GOD’S FAVOR IS UNDENIABLE!!! SO BLESSED FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS AS A COACH FOR TRAINING CAMP!!! THIS IS INSANE, AND FOR IT TO BE MY DAD’S FAVORITE TEAM MAKES IT EVEN MORE SPECIAL!!! HOPE YOU’RE UP THERE SMILING POPS,” Peters wrote.

Before joining Grambling State, Peters was a key piece to multiple high-level high school teams in the state of Louisiana. He coached at powerhouses such as West ST. John High School and Scotlandville Magnet High School.

At Scotlandville, Peters was the offensive coordinator, and they led the state in scoring offense for all three seasons from 2015 to 2017.

Peters was a two-sport athlete during his time in college. He played football and baseball at Alcorn State. Peters graduated in 2003, and was an FCS All-American in 2001 and 2002.

In his career as a wide receiver, Peters had 1829 yards and 24 touchdowns in his two years playing college football in the SWAC Conference.
