Only so much can get accomplished during the spring portion of the NFL offseason, but that doesn't take away the importance of OTAs for the New York Giants. In fact, this run is one of the most important in recent times, since the team has officially moved on from the former franchise passer, Daniel Jones.
The Giants drafted Jaxson Dart out of Ole Miss to be the face of the future. For the time being, the Giants are going to keep Dart on ice while shifting the culture behind the seasoned veteran, Russell Wilson, who's got the trust of New York's head coach Brian Daboll.
"I think it's important to listen to the quarterbacks. They're the ones that are touching the ball on every play," Daboll told reporters recently, according to Giants.com. "Certainly, he has a lot of accolades behind his playing career and experience. It's been good."
It's not just Wilson who is taking command of the Giants' quarterback room. While Wilson is expected to be the starter and could maintain that role throughout the entire season, Daboll and the Giants are still relying on the veterans Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito to have a strong behind-the-scenes impact as well.
Daboll is encouraged by the outcome of the new system put in place by Wilson.
"When you're in that room and you're talking to those guys, they see things from a wide scope perspective and bring things up and there's a lot of good communication," Daboll finished. "I think it's important to really talk and communicate and listen to any of the quarterbacks, but Russ has been good for us, I'd say, in a number of ways since he's been out here."
The narrative surrounding Wilson in recent years hasn't been favorable. For most of his career, which was spent with the Seattle Seahawks, who drafted Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, he was viewed as one of the top franchise quarterbacks in the league. Wilson won on the field and led with praised professionalism on a daily basis.
Since his move to the Denver Broncos and, eventually, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the narrative has shifted. Over the past three years, Wilson has just one stretch of a winning record. He went 6-5 with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year.
The Giants' organization struggled to overcome the downfall of Daniel Jones last year. They missed the playoffs for the second season in a row. The expectations are down for both parties heading into the 2025 campaign, yet Daboll and his coaching staff remain quite optimistic about what kind of turnaround Wilson can put in place.
It starts in the spring, and so far, all is well.
