What Man City stars did before Club World Cup shows squad's true colours

From dropping in on a primary school to stepping up to the oche, Manchester City stars helped to surprise a number of local fans and thank them for their support.

Before heading off for the Club World Cup last week, Pep Guardiola's squad headed off around Greater Manchester to give back to some local Blues.

That included Phil Foden, Nico O'Reilly and Savinho taking to the dartboard with Stockport teenager Alex McGarrie, who left school last year after being bullied. John Stones and Rico Lewis surprised Gorton local Allan Grafton, who has just been awarded an MBE for his services to local grassroots football, with the pair popping in for a chat at his home.

Ilkay Gundogan and Stefan Ortega put on a special stadium tour for the Almond family as they continue to inspire after the sudden death of their daughter Maisie last year, while Matheus Nunes, Claudio Echeverri and Nico Gonzalez surprised headteacher Maureen Hughes ahead of her retirement from Ravensbury Community School a few minutes away from the Etihad.

Rodri and Ederson popped down to the Blue Crescent Supporters Club, established last year and the first official Muslim supporters club attached to City. There, they met Imran to talk about his experiences watching City lift all five trophies in 2023 including the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.

The visits were all part of the 'Love This City' idea from City in the Community that looks to recognise City supporters across the year

Speaking about the visits, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan said: “It’s great to visit our fans in the local community before we compete in the Club World Cup.

"We’re looking forward to seeing our incredible fans in Manchester when we arrive back, to share more memories and moments together.”

City are preparing for their first match at the Club World Cup, having travelled out last week. Guardiola's side take on Moroccan team Wydad on Wednesday in Philadelphia before completing the group stage with games against Al Ain and Juventus.

The competition runs until the middle of July, with City aiming to go all the way as they look to put a disappointing season behind them.
