Jarell Quansah’s rollercoaster ride at Liverpool could have a new twist

The lad from Warrington has had a whirlwind two years since he returned from his loan at Bristol Rovers in 2023.

His impressive time in Bristol meant that he spent the pre-season with Liverpool’s first team and Jurgen Klopp.

Breakout Under Klopp

After spending time in and around the first team, Jarell made his debut for the club in the fantastic 2-1 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park.

He came on in the 77th minute to replace, the legend, Joel Matip. Just two games later, Quansah made his full first team debut against Wolves, in a 3-1 win.

Throughout the 2023/24 season he was a regular first team player, in the cup competitions and in Europe, Jarell was a mainstay in the Starting XI.

During his time in the first team, he impressed on many occasions with manager Jurgen Klopp praising the youngster on multiple occasions, “He’s a Top Talent”, “I liked him from the first moment I saw him”.

His appearances that season, showed how much Klopp liked him.

He made 34 appearances, 27 of which were starts, in his first season at the top level, playing in 2,584 minutes of action. When he played the team kept seven clean sheets.

Struggling Under New Management

Going into this past season, with a full season under his belt and a new man at the helm to impress, Quansah was expected to breakout even further this year.

This was not the case. It started bad for Jarell, in the first game of the new season, Quansah partnered Virgil van Dijk at the back against newly promoted Ipswich. He was hooked at half-time after a lacklustre first half performance.

Jarell then did not feature in the Premier League until December.

He was, however, a starter in the Carabao Cup starting four of the six games Liverpool played on their way to a loss in the final, in which, Jarell played at right-back.

This would be a position Quansah would be used to by the end of the season.

Arne Slot never seemed to warm to the English centre-back, he started in just four games, two of which were after the team had won the league.

Another one of his starts had him at right back against Newcastle, this time in the league. Whenever Slot turned to Jarell it was mainly for short stints to fill in at right back to make sure of a win.

After featuring in over 2,500 minutes under Klopp, his minutes were halved under Arne Slot.

In all competitions he played in 25 games, meaning he was involved in just 1,290 minutes. Compared to the 27 starts he made under Klopp, Slot had him in 12 of his starting XI.

Move to Bayer Leverkusen?

From an upcoming star to surplus to requirements, all in the space of two seasons.

The Athletic are reporting that Liverpool could sanction a move for the 22-year-old, for the right money.

Liverpool are valuing the youngster at £40 million, with Leverkusen showing the strongest interest at the moment.

As we know Leverkusen and Liverpool have been in contact, A LOT, so far this summer. With Frimpong and, hopefully, Wirtz going from Die Werkself to the Reds.

Under new management, with former Man United manager Erik Ten Hag in charge, Quansah will be heading to a new era in Germany and could be playing week in, week out in the Bundesliga and also the Champions League.

This feels like it could be a good move for Quansah, obviously a risk, but with regular first team football, his chances of getting to the 2026 World Cup are higher and his ability to develop further is also boosted due to regular action.

The risk for Jarell is that this new era for Leverkusen could take a bad turn at any moment, just like Ten Hag’s time at Man United, when he was expected to take them to the top. He failed in doing so.
