'World-class' star wants to join Manchester United after telling Premier League club he wants to leave

Man Utd are open to improvement at wing-back this summer and the Premier League star could be an option

Brighton star Pervis Estupinan has reportedly made it clear he 'wants to join' Manchester United in the summer transfer window after he requested to leave Brighton.

Ruben Amorim is open to adding another wing-back to his squad this summer and has a preference for players who are already proven in the Premier League. It could make a move for Estupinan appealing, though it is unclear how much Brighton would demand for the 27-year-old this summer.

Last week, the Ecuadorian revealed he had 'spoken to Brighton' about his transfer plans and that the club had given their blessing for him to explore his options. The left-back has scored five goals and registered 14 assists in 104 appearances since he moved to the South Coast from Villarreal three years ago. A potential move to Old Trafford is not a current priority for United but the defender is supposedly eager to move to Manchester this summer.

Estupinan ‘wants’ Manchester United move

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown claims Brighton star Pervis Estupinan has made it clear he wants to move to Old Trafford this summer.

“Estupinan is looking to move away from Brighton,” he told Football Insider. "It’s a strange situation at Brighton, they’re praised a lot for their recruitment, but there are players queuing up to want to leave. We’ve spoken about Joao Pedro and O’Riley before, now it’s Estupinan.

“His agent has been making his availability known to a number of clubs, and from what I hear he wants to join Man United. I think he’s a decent player, but I don’t think it’s going to be a priority for them.

“Luke Shaw has got back to full fitness and they’re hopeful he can stay fit, they bought Dorgu in January, and they’ve got Harry Amass coming through as well. Their priorities are at centre-forward and in midfield, so I don’t expect them to move for Estupinan. He’s a player they wanted previously, and I’m sure he’s still got admirers, but unfortunately for him they look to have moved on.”

Why would United want to sign him

Estupinan has three seasons of Premier League experience and has been a part of a Brighton side that have finished in the top half for two of the three seasons he’s been there. Prior to joining the Seagulls, Estupinan formed part of the Villarreal team that won the Europa League in 2021 by beating United and later reached the Champions League semi-finals.

The 27-year-old is blessed with speed, agility, stamina and excellent defensive awareness. He’s seen as an asset at both ends of the pitch and was even referred to by former United captain Antonio Valencia as one of the best full-backs in the world.

“For me, Pervis Estupinan is the best left-back in the Premier League and maybe the best in the world," he said in 2023. "He is having an incredible season and he has room to improve. He’s strong defensively, he’s good on the ball, his crossing has improved, he’s very intelligent. I think he will continue to improve because he’s very professional.”
