Manchester United youngster scores in dramatic 5-5 draw for England under-19s at European championships

The season is not quite yet over for one promising Manchester United youth prospect.

Ethan Wheatley was not involved in Manchester United’s post-season tour, as he was preparing to play for England at the under-19s European Championships.

Wheatley is now off the mark at the tournament, playing a key role in the Young Lions’ dramatic 5-5 draw with Germany.

Ethan Wheatley on target

England’s under-19s had fallen 2-0 down, and they were 4-1 down at half-time. Germany added a fifth goal in the 48th minute to soar into a 5-1 lead.

It was getting embarrassing for England, and it was at that point Manchester United forward Ethan Wheatley got on the scoresheet.

Wheatley scored a 52nd minute goal that looked like a consolation, making it 5-2. But this was the trigger for a dramatic comeback.

England quickly hit back with three more goals to tie the game up at 5-5 by the 67th minute, and incredibly that was how the game finished.

The draw was England’s second of the campaign, following a 2-2 draw with Norway. Wheatley and co. face off against the Netherlands in the next game.

Confidence booster for Ethan Wheatley

Ethan Wheatley became Manchester United’s 250th academy graduate at the end of the 2023-24 season.

While he got opportunities in pre-season, and played as a substitute under Ruud van Nistelrooy in a Carabao Cup game, Ruben Amorim was not as enthused.

Wheatley was sent out on loan and had a disappointing stint at Walsall, failing to score a goal in the four matches he played.

He did return to United late in the season to feature for the under-21s, and ended the campaign with 11 goals for the under-21s.

Getting the chance to play for England is valuable for Wheatley and it can only boost his confidence to get on the scoresheet again, ahead of a possible pre-season chance.
