Report: Pep Guardiola set to make key Man City decision depending on the FIFA Club World Cup

Manchester City’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign gets underway on Wednesday.

The Premier League giants take on Moroccan outfit Wydad AC in Philadelphia as part of Group G, which is one they are expected to top with Al Ain and Juventus the other competitors.

City’s summer so far has built up to the clash with Wydad as Pep Guardiola wanted four to five new signings ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, and the legendary coach has brought them all in ahead of the Club World Cup.

It was reported ahead of the tournament that Guardiola was not too bothered about the competition, but now that Man City are in America, they’ll want to win, and once that is done, another key decision will need to be made.

Pep Guardiola to decide on more Man City signings after the Club World Cup

The opening phase of the summer transfer window saw Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, and Marcus Betinelli arrive at the Etihad Stadium; however, there are still some key areas that need to be addressed ahead of the Premier League getting back underway in August.

According to ESPN, Guardiola will continue to assess his squad throughout the entirety of their involvement in the Club World Cup, and once that has concluded, the Man City boss will decide on whether to sign more players.

Rob Dawson wrote: “City sources have told ESPN that the club’s transfer business might not be over and that Guardiola will “see how it goes” at the Club World Cup before pushing for more additions.”

Fabrizio Romano thinks Man City will move for a right-back after the Club World Cup, while a goalkeeper may be on the cards as the future of Ederson remains up in the air.

There have also been several changes off the field this summer, and the benefits of these are already being seen.

PSG have inspired Pep Guardiola at Man City

Under Luis Enrique, Paris Saint-Germain have become the best team in world football and the Ligue 1 side made that clear to everybody during their run to the Champions League title last season.

A key trait of the French team was their ability to move the ball quickly and transition at pace, and according to ESPN, Guardiola has been inspired by PSG, with the City boss now trying to move away from the slow football they produced throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

According to ESPN, Pep Lijnders has been playing a big part in this, as Jurgen Klopp’s former assistant has often been heard on the training pitch while walking between the drills shouting “speed, speed.”

It remains to be seen how this translates to matches over the coming weeks, but Man City fans will get their first glimpse on Wednesday against Wydad.
