It would make so much sense for Liverpool to sell ‘unbelievable’ player now, he has to go - opinion

Liverpool are gearing themselves up for a massive clear-out this summer, with numerous players already getting linked with moves away.

The Reds don’t often sell their players, but when they do, it’s usually for a good reason.

This time around, it seems like Arne Slot is looking at selling a fair few members of his first-team squad in order to welcome some much-needed additions to his ranks.

Players such as Jeremie Frimpong have already been brought in, with Florian Wirtz’s transfer also edging closer.

As mentioned, however, due to players of this calibre arriving in Merseyside, some will have to be sacrificed, which is exactly what seems to be happening.

Liverpool must sell Andy Robertson this summer

One of the main transfer stories to have emerged from Anfield over the last month or so is that Milos Kerkez is almost a Liverpool player.

The Hungarian left-back is set to join from Bournemouth for a fee worth around £45million, with Slot looking to improve this position after Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas failed to live up to expectations last term.

Many fans expected Tsimikas to be the one departing Anfield, but over the last week or so, rumours have emerged linking Robertson with a move to Atletico Madrid.

Although Liverpool’s fanbase likely won’t want to see the back of the Scotsman, his departure makes a lot of sense as he’s a tad older than Tsimikas and is also in the final year of his contract.

So, with no extension in sight, this could end up being the last time Liverpool will be able to get any sort of money for the defender, which, with the business Slot wants to do this summer, would be ideal.

The Reds have already been through a free agent saga with Trent Alexander-Arnold, and nobody needs to go through that again, especially not just the season after.

Why Kostas Tsimikas should be the one to stay at Liverpool

Since his arrival, Tsimikas has been the back-up left-back at the club.

The self-proclaimed Greek Scouser has never put a foot wrong for Liverpool when called upon and has always seemed to put in plenty of effort.

In Robertson’s case, he quickly became the number one left-back at the club and with Kerkez soon to arrive, it feels like it would be hard for him to get used to being the number 2.

Indeed, this could be totally wrong, and he could end up mentoring the 21-year-old, but on the face of things, especially since the Scotsman will be on higher wages, his exit makes sense.

That is, even if he was called “unbelievable” by Robbie Savage back in 2023.

Of course, only time will tell what the future holds, but for now, the departure of Robertson seems like the best thing for all the involved parties.
